Introducing the NPSL-RL: Accessible. Competitive. Connected.
American soccer has no shortage of leagues. What it has lacked is a clear, connected pathway for ambitious amateur clubs to enter the national landscape without getting lost in it. That's the gap the NPSL Regional League (NPSL-RL) was built to close.
Launching in Spring 2026, the NPSL-RL is a new adult men's competition organized regionally and operated nationally. It sits one level beneath the National Premier Soccer League's Tier 1 competition, providing clubs with a structured, professionally managed environment where they can compete, grow, and prepare for the next level.
Rather than requiring clubs to meet every Tier 1 standard on day one, the NPSL-RL creates an intentional pathway, one that allows organizations to develop under the NPSL banner while building toward long-term sustainability.
The NPSL-RL combines regional competition with national alignment. Clubs benefit from more flexible entry standards than Tier 1 while participating in a league built around the professionalism, service, and competitive standards that have defined the NPSL for more than two decades.
It's designed for ambitious amateur clubs across the country,not just those already equipped for national competition. Three principles define the Regional League:
An affordable cost structure and practical entry standards make the league attainable for clubs that are still building their infrastructure, staffing, and operations while maintaining expectations that encourage long-term growth.
Year-round competition, featuring fall and spring seasons, keeps clubs active beyond the traditional summer schedule. Players continue developing, supporters remain engaged, and organizations build consistency throughout the year.
Every regional league operates under one national identity, one set of league standards, and one clear pathway to NPSL Tier 1. Clubs compete locally while becoming part of a broader national network.
The timing couldn't be better. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup driving unprecedented attention toward soccer in the United States, more communities are looking to build meaningful opportunities for players beyond the youth game.
As NPSL Tier 1 Managing Director Cindy Spera said, "With the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming, there has never been a better time to invest in American soccer." The NPSL-RL gives clubs a practical way to make that investment by providing an organized, sustainable environment where they can establish themselves and grow.
The league's national rollout is supported through a strategic partnership between the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the Great Lakes Alliance (GLA), an organization serving more than 1,300 member teams and approximately 20,000 players across Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Perhaps the most important thing to understand about the NPSL-RL is what it isn't. It isn't a permanent destination. It's an incubator.
The Regional League exists to help clubs compete, strengthen their operations, meet higher standards, and ultimately position themselves for advancement into NPSL Tier 1 when they're ready.
