Where NPSL-RL Fits: Understanding the Pathway from Amateur to the National stage!
Ask ten amateur soccer club leaders to draw the U.S. soccer pyramid, and you'll likely get ten different diagrams. Between sanctioning bodies, regional leagues, national competitions, and overlapping pathways, it's often difficult to understand where a club fits, or where it can go next.
The NPSL-RL was created to bring clarity to that journey.
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is a national amateur league affiliated with USASA and holds a distinction unmatched in the men's game: it is the first and only league designated as USASA Tier 1.
That designation represents more than status. NPSL clubs compete for three qualifying berths into the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup each year, benefit from national exposure, and participate in a league with a proven history of developing players for the professional game. Most recently, 13 NPSL alumni were selected in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.
The NPSL-RL sits directly beneath that Tier 1 platform. It was designed for ambitious clubs that aren't yet ready, or simply don't yet need, the full commitment of Tier 1 competition but want to be part of a nationally connected system rather than an independent regional league with no clear path forward.
Very few clubs begin at Tier 1 readiness.
Most start with a roster, a home field, committed volunteers, and a vision for growth. Until now, moving from local or regional competition into a nationally recognized Tier 1 league often meant making a significant leap in infrastructure, operations, and investment.
The NPSL-RL creates the missing step.
It maintains the professional standards associated with the NPSL while providing more accessible entry requirements that allow clubs to grow sustainably. Clubs can establish their operations, strengthen their organization, compete in a nationally recognized environment, and build toward Tier 1 membership when the time is right, not before.
The NPSL has always focused on more than competition. It exists to develop clubs, players, and communities.
Tier 1 competition is open to players ages 16 and older, creating an environment where college players, former professionals, and rising amateurs compete together. Since its founding in 2003, the league has helped bridge the gap between youth soccer, the collegiate game, and the professional ranks.
The NPSL-RL extends that same philosophy to the club level. By providing a nationally connected regional competition, clubs can begin building within the NPSL ecosystem earlier in their lifecycle while giving players access to a competitive environment with a defined pathway forward.
The pathway is straightforward:
- Local & Regional Amateur Competition — where most clubs begin building their identity. This is the natural step for club teams exiting the youth cycle. One of the largest underserved groups in the "pyramid".
- NPSL-RL — accessible regional competition connected through a national structure, emphasizing sustainable growth and professional standards.
- NPSL Tier 1 — USASA's only Tier 1 men's league, offering a pathway to the U.S. Open Cup and one of the country's strongest amateur-to-professional player pipelines.
That middle step changes everything.
Instead of asking clubs to leap into Tier 1, the NPSL-RL gives them the opportunity to grow into it. Building the organizational foundation, competitive experience, and operational standards needed for long-term success.
